    En Kenya, Tanzania y Uganda se ha encontrado a personas que compran diplomas falsificados en toda suerte de fábrica de diplomas y otras universidades fraudulentas. Esas universidades no tienen existencia física y operan sólo mediante sitios en la Web. La mayoría de las fábricas de diplomas operan desde la Gran Bretaña o los Estados Unidos, donde se asume que los estándares académicos son muy altos. Recientemente, la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI, por sus siglas en inglés) recolectó una lista de más de 10 mil personas que han obtenido un diploma falsificado de fábricas situada en los EE.UU. Un número significativo de ellos provienen de Sudáfrica, Kenya y Nigeria. Actualmente hay unas 80 fábricas de diplomas conocidas que operan desde los EE.UU. y el Reino Unido.
