    L’ingérence du politique dans les universités d’Afrique n’est pas un phénomène nouveau. Dans les années 1980 et 1990, la gouvernance des universités semble avoir été accaparée à des fins plus politiques qu’académiques. Avec la priorité accordée à la solidité des structures de gouvernance, une évolution s’amorce au milieu des années 1990. Les gouvernements s’engagent à aider les établissements stables pour qu’ils puissent se concentrer sur leurs missions académiques. Mais selon des études financées par la Carnegie Corporation de New York et réalisées par le CODESRIA, rien n’aurait vraiment changé, avec la persistance des tensions et des crises associées à l’ancien ordre politique — manifestations d’étudiants, harcèlement du personnel académique et corruption généralisée.
