    Los nuevos profesores a menudo reciben sus salarios con meses de atraso. Para cubrir sus necesidades de ingresos tienen que complementarlos con un segundo trabajo. Esto puede afectar su asistencia a la escuela y ejercer presión sobre la cantidad de tiempo del que disponen para preparar sus lecciones. Un informe de 2007 de la ONG camboyana Education Partnership (NEP) revela que los costos de la educación de cada niño era de $108 anuales en promedio o el 9% del ingreso anual de cada familia. "Cuando se incluyen los costos informales y formales de la escuela, así como las clases particulares y la comida, muchos estudiantes están pagando $2,50 diarios", dijo a IRIN el ejecutivo de educación y fortalecimiento de capacidades de la NEP. Según el informe, la incapacidad para pagar contribuciones informales fue la razón más común dada por los padres para explicar el abandono de la escuela por sus hijos.
