Some might suggest that plagiarism and cheating are more common in the internet era. Some might suggest that bribes for university entrance and to augment one's grades are more common given an overall environment of economic stringency, administrative transition, and the weakness of other societal institutions. The assessment of these influences is correct, but inadequate. The only reasonable barrier to honest conduct of university affairs is the character of the actors themselves. To the extent that they are socially cohesive and have internalized the norms and mores of their functions as teachers and students, corruption can gain no ground. Colleges and universities can help to create such social cohesion and internalize norms and mores and they have an ethical responsibility to do so.
