EOL grantee: A4T mobile App

The A4T mobile app, developed by Transparency International Kenya, helps citizens monitor the use of public funds in public primary schools and public health centres in Nairobi County. It provides information on the budget, including annual resources and expenditure per head, as well as additional resources related to donations, parental contributions and income-generating activities. The app also allows users to report cases of corruption and is designed to provide advice and assistance to users. The initiative's website also includes reports with data analysis based on budget reviews and audit processes.

Follow the Money

Follow the Money empowers stakeholders to track education funding, advocate for equitable resource allocation, and hold the Government accountable for the effective and efficient use of public funds in the education sector. By providing citizens with access to information and advocacy tools, it contributes to efforts to improve the quality and equity of education. Launched in Nigeria in 2012, the initiative has expanded its reach to 10 countries across Africa. Follow the Money primarily uses social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, as well as the use of data visualisation techniques and advocacy to raise awareness and put pressure on the Government to improve its accountability in areas such as education, health, gender, water, sanitation and the environment. The core of the project remains the monitoring of school construction and rehabilitation projects, but it also includes a digital platform with information on monitoring government spending and international aid.

Students Acting for Honesty, Integrity, and Equality (SHINE)

Integrity Action's Students Acting for Honesty, Integrity and Equality (SHINE) initiative works with young people (aged 14-19) who become monitors to identify and solve integrity problems in their schools. With the support of local partners, Integrity Clubs have been established in secondary schools to encourage the active participation of young people at risk of exclusion as monitors. Integrity Action uses a mobile application called DevelopmentCheck. Monitors use the app to record their findings, including problems they identified, proposed solutions, and feedback from the community on the project or service being monitored. Although use of the app is restricted to authorised users, the web application with all notifications and images is openly accessible.
