For the education sector, this is no exception as corruption can impede access and undermine equity and quality. However, several tools exist to help education stakeholders, including civil society actors, take steps to hold service providers accountable and improve education service oversight and delivery.

For six years now, the Ministry of Education has hosted an open budgeting initiative – Orçamento Participativo das Escolas, or OPEscolas – reaching some 200,000 young people in 90% of the country’s public schools.

Open school data is a powerful tool. When used properly, open data can promote citizen control over the transfer and use of financial, material, and human resources. Open data can hold local and school authorities to account, improve service delivery, and detect malpractice at the school level – and most importantly, enable citizens to stand up for their right to quality education.

Webinar on the fight against corruption in education in Uzbekistan
On February 17, as part of the Avloniy Webinar Series, IIEP Programme Specialist, Ms Muriel Poisson was invited to facilitate a webinar on corruption mitigation in the Uzbek education system. It was attended by over 230 school principals, teachers, administrative staff and other education stakeholders from around the country.

IIEP panel on open school data at the 19th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC)
On December 3, as part of the 19th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC), IIEP organized a panel on “Open School Data for SDG: Does It Help Reduce Corruption in Education?” The session registered over 100 participants from countries across the world, including Brazil, Georgia, Romania, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Germany, Singapore, and France, among others.

E4J: The importance of teacher codes of conduct in teaching the rule of law

A talk with IIEP researcher: Muriel Poisson on open government in education
The latest addition to IIEP’s series on Ethics and Corruption in Education is here! The new book, prepared under the guidance of Muriel Poisson, IIEP Programme Specialist, is the first in a new research project on open government in education. The book combines an in-depth conceptual overview with an initial analysis of projects already in place worldwide.
