In an effort to enhance fairness and transparency in college admissions, the government announced an increase of the traditional admissions track based on the nationwide college entrance exam, while reducing the rate of the non-standardized admissions track – based on other factors such as school grades and extracurricular activities.

Anti-corruption advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued Delta State governor over poor funding of primary education in his state. His administration has received N7.8bn from Universal Basic Education Commission, apart from other funds from the Federal Government. Moreover, SERAP pointed out the case of a student who was sent home because her parents could not afford the illegal school fee of N900.

Experts say the employment of individuals with bogus credentials can be a public relations fiasco for both private companies and government. More than 160 students — nearly 30 percent of the student body — at D.C.’s celebrated Duke Ellington School of the Arts live outside the city and are not paying the tuition required of suburbanites who attend the District’s public schools, an internal investigation has found. The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education has condemned academics, staff and students operating in a syndicate in order to do student placements and applauded investigations that are being instituted. A call has been made that policies that have been announced by government and authorised by Parliament must be implemented. Universities will be requested to inform Parliament what steps are being taken to close any loopholes that might be used to undermine legislation and policies.
