In the most remote regions of Pakistan, the education of young children is problematic. Due to a lack of resources, many schools have been abandoned and teachers, inadequately paid by a failing government, are not coming to teach. Thousands, if not millions, of children are deprived of an education and left to fend for themselves.

The Hauts-de-France Regional Council has set up the Participatory Budget for Upper Secondary Schools (BPL) to improve living and studying conditions for students in their schools. This project is part of a participatory democracy approach, in which it is the pupils themselves who are involved in the equipment and renovation projects for their lycée. 

An ongoing initiative in Cameroon is helping to empower citizens and make their local governments, schools, and health centers accountable for better service delivery. This initiative has also been put in place to raise the awareness of citizens with regard to budgetary issues.

Swaziland's Minister of Finance has told the Senate that each year the country loses nearly double the annual social services budget to corruption. He estimated that about US$10.6 million a month was disappearing – amounting to about US$128 million annually - while the government's 2010/11 budget allocated US$75 million to social services, including US$24.2 million for education.
