    To ensure the healthy development of academia, there has to be fundamental changes made to China’s academic incentive system with a move away from the current method of judging researchers through the number of publications they have in ranked journals. This method leads some to chase after numbers while ignoring academic integrity. With deep roots in Chinese cultural traditions and a fertile soil that nourishes corruption, China’s battle against research misconduct is doomed to be arduous.

    Moves to halt irregular professorial appointments

    The Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities or AVCNU has proposed reforms to deal with the increasing number of individuals being promoted to professorships without apparently following due process.
    At its recent annual conference, AVCNU took a unanimous decision to put forward a reform proposal to the National Universities Commission to arrest the trend, which is threatening the integrity of some institutions.
    Some of the irregularities with regard to promotion have been leaked to the media, resulting in embarrassment for the affected universities. Since the story appeared, individuals have been emboldened to speak out about how other academics have become professors in questionable situations.

    LACC, MOE End First Phase of Student Integrity Clubs

    The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has ended the first phase of establishing Student Integrity Clubs in Liberian Schools. The project is being sponsored by the UNDP under its STAOP Project. The first phase of the project targeted several high schools with the project expected to be extended to schools throughout the country. The initiative by the LACC and the Ministry of Education to establish Student Integrity Clubs is aimed at providing and sharing corruption information among students as future leaders of Liberia.
