In Rawalpindi, Pakistan, two education officials were remanded in a corruption case involving nearly Rs 10 million (about $45,000) meant for school supplies. They created fake purchase documents without proper tendering and approved payments without delivering any goods. Charges were filed under anti-corruption laws and the Pakistan Penal Code.

In the last three years, corruption suspicions in the Sindh School Education Department prompted investigations by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the FIA's anti-corruption wing. Issues include overpriced biometric machines, questionable contracts, and undisclosed transactions. A two-member inquiry board is looking into complaints from professors. Cases of corruption in the college education department, including funds for activities like digital libraries and teacher training, remain unresolved.

An official of the Basic Education Community Schools from South Punjab was caught selling around 3,500 textbooks. He also blackmailed teachers in Pakpattan and Okara into paying him between Rs1,000-Rs1,500 for the delivery of books to the education warehouse. Reports state teachers complained several times to relevant education authorities but received no response.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the shutdown of illegal campuses of private universities across the country. Preston University and Al Khair University has set up illegal campuses in Karachi and Lahore and students approached the Higher Education Commission (HEC) because these universities were not issuing degrees. The Court directed the HEC to award degrees to the students who had passed out from illegal campuses through some special arrangement and implement these policies throughout the country.

Sindh Education Curriculum Department has decided to shut down 10,000 “not viable” or inactive schools across the province. The Supreme Court has issued orders to shut down ghost schools and act against teachers who have been receiving salaries without performing their duties.

The Accountability Court Hyderabad gave five years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 30 million to four officers from the education department. They have recruited 208 candidates in violation of the procedure and direction of the department and without checking the qualification certificates from relevant boards. According to the National Accountability Bureau, they had inflicted a loss of Rs 127.48 million on the public treasury for wages paid to these employees.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested three secondary school teachers for their involvement in taking bribes and making fake appointments based on fake degrees in the Punjab Education Department. Some influential political figures have made efforts to obtain the release of arrested teachers, but have failed due to ACE’s investigation into this issue.

The Provincial Inspection Team (PIT) detected embezzled amount of Rs19.4 million from just 24 Iqra Farogh-e-Taleem Voucher Scheme (IFTVS) schools in Mansehra instead of the 89 schools registered by the KP government. The Provincial Bureau of Statistics (BOS) survey identified 23,071 out of schoolchildren for their enrolment in district Mansehra. However, the PIT inquiry found, “the data collected by BOS was erroneous as per 100% validation by district programme officer only 4,183 students were physically available, whereas the PIT also found a huge variation in the data.”

Sindh Anti-Corruption Establishment has found corruption and misuse of authority in Sindh Education Department district Jacobabad involving illegal inducting of hundreds of fake teachers, getting illegal financial benefits in the name of fake employees’ retirement, pension and death claims from department and life insurance company. The investigation continues after the fraud of millions of rupees has been reported, as well as the illegal role and abuse of authority from officers of the Education and Finance Departments.
