To uphold integrity during exam season, the Rongo University has installed surveillance cameras in examination halls and increased the number of supervisors and invigilators. Additionally, the university has introduced anonymous reporting systems, allowing students and staff to report fraud through secure channels. These measures have significantly reduced cheating and reinforced the importance of academic integrity through strict enforcement of policies.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a new biometric enrolment and validation of teachers system intended to address staff shortages and prevent the use of fake degrees. Pre-loaded data from the TSC payroll system will be validated when the teachers provide physical documents such as an enrolment certificate, national identity card, letter of first and last appointment together with their academic and professional certificates. This pilot registration took off in 143 schools in seven counties.

In order to ensure that only genuine qualifications cross borders, The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) joined the African Qualifications Verification Network, an initiative of the African Union to support the mobility of students and workers on the continent. Under the regulation developed in 2018, anyone seeking employment in Kenya with foreign qualifications must be assessed by the KNQA and granted a certificate of recognition or verification.

A number of school heads planned to defraud the government by providing lists of non-existing teachers, which delayed the release of the funds to pay teachers and other staff employed by the Boards of Management (BoM). The Minister of Education asked principals to collect and submit the right data of BoM teachers employed including names, the Teachers Service Commission number, and the country they belong to.

A higher education qualifications framework aimed, inter alia, at curbing the proliferation of fake certificates will be in place at the start of January 2018. In terms of the new Kenya National Qualifications Framework, a national database of qualifications, publishing codes and guidelines will be maintained; an annual report on the status of qualifications will be produced; and interrelationships and linkages across national qualifications in consultation with stakeholders will be reviewed. The framework will also provide accurate graduate data to prospective employers.

A TV exposé last week unearthed a certificate and diploma mill at one of Kenya’s leading aviation colleges. It also uncovered widespread rot in higher education institutions, many of which engage in academic malpractices and some of which are dishing out qualifications without requiring a person to step into a classroom or study.

Anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International has launched a campaign in Kenyan primary schools to teach students about the problems of corruption, Kenya's Capital FM reported Thursday.
