The students of Information Technology, Arts and English departments boycotted the classes against non-provision of facilities and denounced abuse of powers. They alleged that the university administration was involved in embezzling funds allocated for the student facilities. They appealed to Sindh Governor, National Accountability Bureau chief Justice, and Sindh Chief Minister to take notice of the issue and help them for the provision of required facilities.

A diary seized from a Karimnagar lecturer, a co-accused in the case, revealed that the certificate racket is much murkier than the police initially thought. CCS additional DCP told TOI, “We have questioned the main accused, 41, from June 7 to 11. We analyzed the diary which revealed that the lecturer, in connivance with the staff of several universities in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Guntur, obtained fake certificates for the accused. At least 4,500 certificates from 60 universities across the country were obtained and sold. He had written the rates of each university certificate in the diary.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan last week ordered the removal of a number of university vice-chancellors because they were appointed in violation of the merit-based system. In stern remarks on 22 April over the appointment of vice-chancellors in Punjab province, Pakistan’s Chief Justice said “The Supreme Court cannot tolerate any appointment without transparency as the state of education in the province is in complete disarray,” and that the appointments were not the most senior professors but had close links with government circles.

A large number of universities, colleges and schools organised walks, seminars and debating competition to raise awareness among students, faculty and other staff. The Student Affairs Director at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), speaking on the occasion of a debating competition organised to mark the day, said that zero tolerance would be shown against corruption and malpractices.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has expressed concerns at universities not following the commission’s plagiarism policy by not taking action on plagiarism complaints against their faculty. HEC’s Plagiarism Standing Committee met on Friday to discuss plagiarism complaints against faculty members of 10 universities. The committee, comprising educationists and representatives of various universities, deliberated upon complaints that have not been actioned upon by the respective universities within 90 days of registration of a complaint, as per the HEC regulations.

The academic spectrum across several Pakistani universities has become infected with the deadly plague of plagiarism. Academic integrity seems to have melted in the heat of churning out research papers to receive more grants, promotions and other benefits.

Plagiarism at the higher education level has been an open secret, with many suspected plagiarists holding senior faculty positions in different universities across the country. But in a comical turn, the Higher Education Commission recently gave its best research paper award to a scholar who had been blacklisted by the regulatory body in 2008 for publishing a plagiarized paper.

The Punjab government has amended Punjab Universities' Acts to bring vice-chancellors under scrutiny after identifying unabated misuse of powers by them under the garb of emergency powers. It reported that almost all Punjab universities' vice-chancellors had appointed top officials in universities, including registrars, treasurers and controllers of examinations by giving additional charge to their "favorite" faculty members.
