Against the backdrop of the recent closure of Nodos International School, Ojo, by the Lagos State government over alleged involvement in examination malpractices during a national Examinations Council (NECO) Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations, the Principal of the school has been relieved of his job. Okafor also stated that all the teaching staff that were also found complicit in the examinations malpractices that led to the closure of the school have also been asked to resign their appointments.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has asked the Minister of Education to "urgently probe alleged stealing of teachers" salaries and benefits in several Federal Government colleges across the country, and punish suspected perpetrators.

In an attempt to curb unregistered teachers, The Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRC) has recently mandated that any teacher in the Imo region caught without the proper qualifications will be fired and prosecuted by the state and that schools not meeting required standards would be closed down.

During an interview, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) discussed the problems and undercurrents of the nation's education sector and the way forward. He strongly criticized the irregularities in the system and said that fighting corruption in its totality must be a priority.

The Niger State Governor has called on the Teachers' Registration Council to go beyond the registration of qualified teachers and enforce basic ethics for teachers, as is being done in other professions. The Kogi State Government claims to have uncovered 800 non-existing primary schools and at least 3,000 ghost teachers on its pay roll during a recent screening exercise. The Nigerian Accountant-general who informed journalists in Lokoja of this, said that such expenditures had been draining government coffers and that counteractive measures would be taken.

Federal government has blacklisted 232 individuals from participating in the conduct of examinations. The affected persons include school principals, supervisors, invigilators and examiners. 324 secondary schools had earlier been derecognized as centers for public examinations. The state had over 50 of its schools blacklisted in the exercise.

The State Security Service (SSS) in Gombe State has discovered that 131 of the 936 Universal Basic Education teachers recruited in the state recently presented fake NCE certificates for employment. A member of the syndicate has confessed that they printed and sold fake NCE certificates issued by the Federal College of Education.

Kogi State Primary Education Board (SPEB) has commenced the verification of primary school teachers' certificates in the state in the effort to sanitize and raise the standard of teaching in primary schools across the state.
