A Guwahati-based private company employee paid Rs 80,000 to a relative of his who works in the Directorate of Elementary Education to get his wife transferred to Guwahati. On the other hand, a female lower primary school teacher who holds a permanent job and works in a different school has been tired of applying for her transfer to Guwahati for the last five years through the legal process while her transfer remains pending. According to a secondary school teacher, any transfer request is processed in Guwahati only after paying bribes.

Three men, including a Delhi University graduate, were arrested for allegedly running a pan-India fake degree racket under which they sold about 50,000 forged certificates of universities and school boards, police said today. The accused, during interrogation, revealed that they had sold at least 50,000 fake degrees and marksheets of various universities and school boards. In order to convince their clients, they had also set up fake websites of the universities and school boards on which the victims verified the authenticity of these documents. The websites were so convincing that victims could not tell the difference between genuine and fake, the senior police official said.

The crime branch of the Lucknow police busted a fake marksheet racket on Sunday and arrested four persons from a multi-storey complex on Hewett Road. The cops, however, disclosed the information on Monday. The police recovered around 400 fake marksheets, 800 papers used for printing them, rubber stamps of several fake examination boards, three laptops, five scanner-cum-printers, one CPU and 12 paper cutters. The gang was preparing fake marksheets for Class 10, 12 and graduation since 2012 and used to charge Rs 5,000 to 10,000 for each marksheet.

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is in talks with HRD Ministry, CBSE, AICTE, Medical Council of India (MCI) and other educational bodies to introduce course content on corruption and ethics to make the students aware of the scourge and its consequences. If implemented, students in schools and colleges will soon be imparted lessons on the menace of corruption, its debilitating impact on socio-economic sphere and ways of tackling it.

In the season of examination results and college admissions, we are again reminded of the dismal condition of the Indian education system. The Punjab School Education Board has, in an act of benevolence, granted 30 grace marks to Class 12 students. This helped lift the state’s pass percentage from 54% to 76%. In Gujarat, the pass percentage in Class 10 dropped from 73% in 2014-15 to 63% this year — which the state education minister attributes to the installation of CCTV cameras in examination centres that have checked cheating. Many Class 10 students in Gujarat could not answer elementary questions in a retest, despite securing over 80% in the objective section of the mathematics paper.
