A Human Rights Watch report revealed that during the Covid-19 school closures, governments in 49 of the world's most populous countries violated children's rights by approving and enabling the widespread adoption of EdTech products. Children have been forced to pay for their learning at the cost of their rights to privacy and access to information. Of the 164 EdTech products examined, 146 (89%) monitored children's personal data secretly and without the consent of children or their parents, both inside and outside their virtual classrooms and on the internet.

The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) launched the Organisational Anti-Corruption Plan 2022-2024 to support efforts to strengthen governance, integrity, and anti-corruption measures. As an agency under the Higher Education Ministry, PTPTN is committed to supporting the government’s plans to create an environment free from corruption and abuse of power that can jeopardise the organisation’s image.

The video shows a platform formed by civil society organizations (CSOs) based in North Macedonia. These organizations work together to fight corruption and promote good governance. CSOs can contribute to addressing many social challenges by participating in policy debates, proposing innovative, sustainable and inclusive solutions, and monitoring the outcomes of reform processes at the beneficiary, regional and local levels.

A high-ranking Department of Education employee used his position to rip off $5 billion from the Government money that should have been spent on public schools. According to the State's anti-corruption, watchdog IBAC, for 7 years he covered his tracks by organizing fake invoices sent from companies owned by him and his friends and family that did not do any work.

Investigations have been launched at the Ministry of Education after an audit revealed that the payroll system has been used illegally to increase the salaries of two employees. The first one, working in administrative affairs, received a bonus on her salary of 1,500 dinars per month from April 2019 to April 2020, and the second employee working in the private education department received a bonus of 800 dinars on her monthly salary from September 2019 to May 2020.

The FBI announced that the former Education Secretary has been charged with allegations that she used her position to give 1,034 square feet of a school to a company in exchange for financial benefits. If found guilty, she could face sentences of up to 10 years for conspiracy and bribery, and up to 20 years for wire fraud.

The FBI arrested the former education secretary along with six people engaged in a public corruption campaign from which they profited at the expense of the Puerto Rico citizens and students. The alleged fraud involved $15.5 million in federal money spent between 2017 and 2019. The education secretary is accused of steering contracts toward her friends without going through regular procedures.

The university students in Zimbabwe are tired by “fraudulent stances’’ taken by the government and the empty promises of receiving their US$100 allowances for living. According to the secretary general of the Zimbabwe National Students Union, the former minister of higher and tertiary education, and his deputy are subjects of a forensic investigation into the possible looting of funds meant for tertiary education students.

According to a report published by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the International Quality Group, corruption in higher education vary between countries but it highlights unethical, inappropriate, and illegal practices. Some examples include university leaders and professors with fake or undeserved doctoral degrees impacting on the governance of some Russian universities, ‘ghost advising’ or absenteeism by senior academics, delegating their responsibilities for teaching or supervision to junior colleagues or research students, is widespread in Kosovo, or students and teachers sexually harassing, threatening or harming academic teaching staff in Uganda.

There have been issues of cronyism, nepotism, and corruption in the Ministry of Education, subject to performance audits focused on adherence to the Government’s procurement guidelines and contracts management. According to the opposition leader, the allegations are related to the misuse of public funds and to the “politically connected” persons who have been employed by the education ministry as advisers, “but are not doing any work”.
