The Justice Department at Stanford University alleged that the head sailing coach accepted multiple donations in exchange for pushing through applications of prospective students. Three donations of $770,000 were received in the sailing program; two of them were from families of students who were never admitted to the school and the third one was expelled last week.

The lists, while controversial, were a resource for many scholars wondering if the invitation to publish a paper or present at a conference sitting in their inbox was legitimate.

A seven-month investigation revealed that a number of Chile's universities are illegally operating as profit-oriented businesses. According to a report conducted by a special investigation committee, eight universities violated anti-profiteering laws amidst findings of increased salaries among executives, circulation of finances between companies under the same private ownership and outsourcing of services as means of generating revenue.
