  • Building a culture of integrity in Montenegro’s higher education system

    At the invitation of the Council of Europe (CoE), IIEP organized a training workshop for members of the National Ethics Committee of Montenegro and several representatives of public and private national Higher Education institutions. The workshop, which was held at the Abbaye de Royaumont (France) from 12 to 14 September 2022, was followed by a study visit and a series of capacity-building activities carried out by the Institute in the framework of the its partnership with CoE .

    Zero Corruption Campaign (ZCC), a civil society organisation that focuses on promoting integrity, accountability, and transparency in the services of public sector institutions, has warned the country’s school authorities to stop collecting money as additional fees for students pursuing their education in 2022/2023. The ZCC said such practices were tantamount to corruption and a deliberate attempt to undermine quality free school education.

    New HE accreditation agency will need enough resources

    The new national agency for the evaluation and accreditation of Higher Education institutions and research centres in Tunisia aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the country’s universities and develop a research system of international quality. However, the Union of Tunisian University teachers criticised the establishment of the agency and called on the Ministry to be transparent and explain how the agency will be funded, at what cost to taxpayers, and what accountability mechanism will be used to stop the wastage of public money and nepotism.

    University banned from recruiting students in wake of scam

    Chung Chou University of Science and Technology (CCUT) has been forcing students from Uganda to work in factories for long hours to pay off debts they incurred since they did not receive the promised scholarships. The university had been under observation for quality issues since 2015 so this new element persuaded the advisory commission on private schools to ask the Ministry of Education for tougher sanctions against CCUT which is no longer allowed to recruit any new students, whether foreign or domestic.
