The Maputo City Court on Thursday sentenced eight people to prison terms of between one and 20 years for their part in a fraud which had diverted 33 million meticais (about 825,000 US dollars at current exchange rates) from the coffers of the Ministry of Education between 2008 and 2011.

Police in Kayonza District are holding a teacher of Groupe Scolaire Kabare in Ngoma District for allegedly selling forged academic report cards to students. The teacher was arrested on Wednesday in Karambi Cell of Murundi Sector, while his accomplices are still at large.

The Kenya National Examination Council has warned KCSE candidates and their parents against buying a fake Chemistry exam paper being circulated. The Council will intercept fake papers and take legal action against individuals found circulating and selling them.

Harare is reportedly losing thousands of dollars in revenue as some of its schools are not remitting tuition fees to the local authority. A bursar at one of the schools is set to appear before a disciplinary committee to answer charges of abusing tuition fees.

The commission’s Director General said these fake or substandard universities offer degrees in various professions at poor quality to students.

After years of piling up paper files, the Education Service Commission (ESC) will soon phase out its manual operations and demand that applicants for a job in the sector resort to electronic applications. The move to electronic means will ease the commission's ability to detect forgeries in applications and employment records.

Tanzania is preparing an Open Data Policy that will guide the country on how to obtain and use data, according to the President. The policy, which is expected to be in place in six months, will develop procedures to identify the government's open data, an institutional framework for open data management, a single window and where the public can access data. Procedures for uploading and updating data will also be defined.

The Deputy President says a proposal to deal with the problem of fake qualifications is being prepared and will soon be presented to Cabinet for approval. He said the Minister of Higher Education and Training has already requested that the South African Qualifications Authority establish a national register to list names of individuals who have misrepresented their qualifications or who have invalid qualifications.

The Kaduna State government has uncovered about 33 phony primary schools in some local government areas. The fake schools were detected during the first phase of biometric verification exercise of state employees ordered by the Governor. The government, which pays about N3 billion monthly as salaries and allowances to its employees, was said to have saved N120 million from fake employee disbursements in the first phase of the exercise.
