In an attempt to curb unregistered teachers, The Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRC) has recently mandated that any teacher in the Imo region caught without the proper qualifications will be fired and prosecuted by the state and that schools not meeting required standards would be closed down.

The Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, accompanied by Directors-General and Deputy Minister, as well as the Head of the Directorate of Support for Private Education and of Partnership (DAEPP), said he was determined to fight corruption in the Free and Compulsory Universal Schooling Programme, (PSUGO).

The "bad men" of today seem to get around. They also seem to have a certain weakness for schools and universities. According to 2011 survey data by Transparency International, globally, 35% of the population in 100 countries has no trust whatsoever in the integrity of their education institutions.

Teachers working in non-existent schools and in municipalities that could not be found on the map, non-existent educational centers, communities that could not be located, and teachers working in two regions. These were some of the irregularities that were revealed by statistics provided by the Registry of the Teaching Profession of the Education Secretariat.

The Minister of Education stated that it is important to formulate a teachers' code of conduct which paves the way for teachers to behave in a respective manner and to create a good teacher role in schools where they are committed to and love the children. The measure was introduced to the national school principals and the zonal directors of education.
