A government-commissioned study of the placement of Norwegian universities in global rankings – in particular compared to other Nordic institutions – has concluded that even the top rankings are so based on subjective weightings of factors and on dubious data that they are useless as a basis for information if the goal is to improve higher education.

There has been an increase in cases of cheating in examinations at several Norwegian universities. 37 cases will be examined at the University of Agder while the University of Tromsø reported that they had encountered more cheating in examinations at the beginning of the year than last year, with 17 cases this year compared to 8 last year.

At a press conference, the Minister of Higher Education admitted to violating government rules by participating in a January meeting that approved a NOK2.6 billion (US$257 million) contract with an ammunition manufacturer. This contract later expanded to NOK4 billion. He also faces allegations of nepotism for appointing a longtime friend to the board of the Norwegian Institution for International Affairs in 2021.
