At an official meeting, the Minister of Higher Education announced that measures will be taken to preserve the confidentiality of examinations in higher education institutions. Questionnaires and answer sheets should be sent via geo-located vehicles no earlier than 30 minutes before the start of the examination. A WhatsApp number has been issued on which complaints about malpractices may be forwarded.

A report from Calcutta High Court shows how the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) allegedly misused the Right to Information (RTI) Act to facilitate illegal recruitment. The chairman of the WBSSC had instructed the chairpersons of the five regional commissions to scan and store their signatures on the WBSSC’s application server. These were used as illegal digital signatures for over 500 fake recommendation letters, allegedly hand-delivered to undeserving candidates.

According to the “Cyber Threats Targeting the Global Education Sector” report, there has been a 20 per cent increase in cyber threats to the global education sector in the first three months of 2022. 58% of threats were targeted at Indian- based educational institutions and online platforms. The USA was the second most affected country globally with 19 recorded incidents. The databases leaked from educational institutions contain personally identifiable information of students and their families, website user records and credentials and examination results.

Four abandoned buildings have made a Gwalior primary school teacher a millionaire. His permanently closed private nursing and education colleges allegedly sold bogus degrees to hundreds of students each year, without running courses or giving them practical training in hospitals. An investigation showed Gwalior has become a hub for issuing nursing degrees in cheap private colleges affiliated to state universities and accredited by the Nursing Council.

The Central Bureau of Investigation filed a report against the former deputy director of the West Bengal school education directorate, officials of the School Service Commission and the Board of Secondary Education for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery for the purpose of cheating and using a forged document or electronic record as genuine. They extended undue advantage in appointing undeserving candidates to Group-D staff posts by violating departmental rules and using forged documents.

A series of petitions have been filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging anomalies in the recruitment of employees of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Many candidates with lower scores were placed at the top of the merit list. More than 500 people were appointed after the School Service Commission panel expired, and they were now drawing salaries from the state government.

A petitioner accused Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bathinda of unethical practices and alleged employment of at least 12 ghost teachers. The employees would just come to the private institute and mark their presence and then return to their own institutes. The high court directed medical bodies to investigate the complaint and take appropriate action.

An audit has been launched last November to investigate alleged corruption in all accounts at Delhi University’s college. 180 books purchased for a lakh never reached the college. The principal misused his position and engaged in various irregularities, including UGC examinations.
