    Ex-school heads jailed for virtual learning fraud

    The Department of Justice reports that two education officials have been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to fraudulently enrolling people in virtual schools and then claiming money from public funds on their behalf. The districts received payments from the Alabama Education Trust Fund as if the students were attending public schools while the defendants misappropriated state money through direct cash payments and payments to third-party contractors owned by various co-conspirators.

    Authorities at the national examination body Uneb accused teachers of orchestrating a grand scheme in schools, that pushed pupils to cheat on the 2020 primary leaving exams. The board withheld the results of 2,220 candidates pending completion of investigations into malpractices. Cheating occurs in a number of ways, including parents, in some of the top schools being asked to commit to paying a fee in order for their children to receive good results in the primary leaving exam.

  • Webinar on the fight against corruption in education in Uzbekistan

    News

    On February 17, as part of the Avloniy Webinar Series, IIEP Programme Specialist, Ms Muriel Poisson was invited to facilitate a webinar on corruption mitigation in the Uzbek education system. It was attended by over 230 school principals, teachers, administrative staff and other education stakeholders from around the country.

    A senior teacher in Khon Kaen is accused of being involved in corruption over two government payment schemes, after 38 villagers from Ban Fang district's Ban complained that she had offered them 200 baht each to claim handouts in the We Travel Together tourism stimulus package. When the villagers tried to register for benefits under the "Rao Chana" (We Win) scheme, they found out their identities had already been used to register them for the Kon La Krueng co-payment subsidy scheme.
