Last December, 1,055 high school communities around Mexico – comprising almost 1.3 million students – engaged in a transparency and accountability exercise. This involves each principal of public high schools completing three electronic forms covering more than 100 indicators. These range from income and expenditure, to enrolment and academic performance, to the condition of school equipment and infrastructure.

School councils serves as an instrument for Parents' Associations, through their Confederations and Federations, to inform and encourage parents to vote in school council elections and to stand as candidates for school councils.

The Hauts-de-France Regional Council has set up the Participatory Budget for Upper Secondary Schools (BPL) to improve living and studying conditions for students in their schools. This project is part of a participatory democracy approach, in which it is the pupils themselves who are involved in the equipment and renovation projects for their lycée. 

A former head teacher, who has advised two Prime Ministers, has been arrested over an alleged fraud during his time at the helm of a leading school. The former advisor, who headed education advisory groups for both Gordon Brown and David Cameron, was and questioned following a tip off from a member of the public for fraudulent activities between 2009 and 2013.

School principals from nine regions (except the West) were summoned and questioned by key officials in the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training as a result of alleged cases of fraud revealed during the inspection of their respective institutions during official exams.
