Universities are being urged to block websites that sell essays, identify cheating "hot spots" and consider publishing data on breaches of academic integrity. As universities grapple with a rise in contract cheating – which involves students outsourcing assessments – Australia's higher education watchdog has unveiled new guidelines to tackle the issue. A recent survey by a University of South Australia associate professor who helped create the guidelines, found that 6 per cent of Australian students engaged in cheating.

A Melbourne start-up has created anti-plagiarism software which is being trialled at four major Australian universities. It's called Cadmus and it tracks students as they complete assignments. The editing and authentication software – which operates like a Google document and can be accessed anywhere – uses keystroke analytics to build up a profile of a student's typing style. This allows it to detect when someone else is dishonestly involved in their work.

High School Certificate (HSC) students are becoming increasingly brazen in their attempts to cheat their way to higher scores, with more than 300 instances of plagiarism recorded in the past year, new data from the Board of Studies reveals. This year, the highest number of cheaters has once again been found across the HSC English subjects with 188 instances of malpractice across the four levels compared to just 15 for all the mathematics courses. Business services had the highest ratio of cheating students, with 9.8 caught per every 1,000.

A senior African academic has lost his job for the second time after an Australian university that appointed him in January belatedly discovered he had been forced to quit his South African post the previous November following charges of serial plagiarism.

An estimated 10,000 students a year are subjected to disciplinary action across Australia's universities, most of them for plagiarism allegations.

Hundreds of WA University students have been caught cheating in exams and plagiarising course work. During the past three years, 545 students have been picked up for plagiarism at Curtin University, 304 at Murdoch, 270 at the University of WA and 182 at Edith Cowan University.
