Teachers working in non-existent schools and in municipalities that could not be found on the map, non-existent educational centers, communities that could not be located, and teachers working in two regions. These were some of the irregularities that were revealed by statistics provided by the Registry of the Teaching Profession of the Education Secretariat.

The Kogi State Government claims to have uncovered 800 non-existing primary schools and at least 3,000 ghost teachers on its pay roll during a recent screening exercise. The Nigerian Accountant-general who informed journalists in Lokoja of this, said that such expenditures had been draining government coffers and that counteractive measures would be taken.

The Sindh Education Minister says that there are 7,700 ghost schools in the province. He accuses officials in his own department of collusion with their counterparts in the Finance Ministry.
