Investigations into alleged misuse of Dutch government funds at Uganda's main university are deepening. The vice chancellor of Kampala's Makerere University is being questioned about 810,000 euros reported missing. And it's not the first time the top academic administrator is quizzed about where money has gone.

Ugandan police have made no arrests among the 88 suspects – some of them alleged to be politicians and business people – implicated in the altering or forging of marks at Makerere University, months after university officials reported the offences. Up to 69 degrees are to be cancelled at Makerere University following the findings of a university audit initiated in September. The audit report, which is not available to the public, has revealed that results were altered at senate level after lecturers and college and school registrars made their submissions.

Mbarara High School headteacher and his bursar are charged with three counts of embezzlement, causing financial loss and abuse of office. The two appeared before the Anti-Corruption court in Kampala and were accused of failing to account for Shs 207 million school money.

Three teachers were placed in prison for conspiracy and examination malpractice. They disobeyed the Uganda Examinations Board’ code of conduct and revealed the content of the 2018 Primary Leaving Examinations paper and then sold them to different schools in Buyende and Kamuli districts.

According to the Ministry of Education and Sport, at least 952 teachers are "ghosts" or irregularly kept on the payroll. Investigations reveal that some head teachers have allowed some teachers to remain on the payroll irregularly. Given an average salary of sh250,000 per month per teacher, government has been paying sh238m monthly to ghost teachers.
