The West African Examinations Council says it has not recorded any case of examination leakage in five years. It also denied knowledge of the existence of "special exam centers". The centers were allegedly created by some principals and secondary school proprietors for their candidates who are compelled to pay fees higher than the official fees charged by WAEC. The money is reportedly used for lobbying officials of the council to release the examination question papers to the centers ahead of the official time of the examination.

The Nigerian education Minister is accused for having given bribes to parliamentarians so they increase the budget for his ministry. Arrested last Thursday, he was released five days later. The President has asked the Minister to resign. The government of Olusegun Obasanjo, which has promised to fight against corruption, has not yet managed to take away Nigeria's reputation as a corrupt country.

The World Bank Country Director in Nigeria has said that Nigeria's audit system has so many weaknesses that it can encourage corruption and financial mismanagement. He pointed out that there is a need to re-draft the country's audit laws, which were made in 1966.

Nigeria's former education minister and six others have gone on trial charged with corruption. The former minister is accused of paying a $400,000 bribe to parliament to ensure the passing of an inflated budget for his department.

The Kogi State Government claims to have uncovered 800 non-existing primary schools and at least 3,000 ghost teachers on its pay roll during a recent screening exercise. The Nigerian Accountant-general who informed journalists in Lokoja of this, said that such expenditures had been draining government coffers and that counteractive measures would be taken.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the existence of no fewer than forty-one illegal universities. These institutions have existed for years and fleeced unsuspecting members of the public of their hard earned resources in the guise of providing them with higher education.

The Kaduna State government has uncovered about 33 phony primary schools in some local government areas. The fake schools were detected during the first phase of biometric verification exercise of state employees ordered by the Governor. The government, which pays about N3 billion monthly as salaries and allowances to its employees, was said to have saved N120 million from fake employee disbursements in the first phase of the exercise.

The Senate Committee on Education last week at the 2016 budget defence noted that it uncovered about N10 Billion hidden in the budget of parastatals by the Federal Ministry of Education. The Chairman of Senate Committee on Higher Education, has said that the N10 billion padding reported to be discovered in the education budget is meant for the Universal basic Education Commission and a typographical error from the office of the National Planning and Budget. The Senator said the issue was not with the ministry of education and that it had been resolved by the house and the senate and would be amended in the budget.
