The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has booked eight persons, including four former employees of the varsity and four private persons for criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, and falsification of accounts. While perusing the details of registration and tuition fees of 16,580 students, the DVAC officials found that the serial number of one demand draft was used multiple times against several students.

A report from Calcutta High Court shows how the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) allegedly misused the Right to Information (RTI) Act to facilitate illegal recruitment. The chairman of the WBSSC had instructed the chairpersons of the five regional commissions to scan and store their signatures on the WBSSC’s application server. These were used as illegal digital signatures for over 500 fake recommendation letters, allegedly hand-delivered to undeserving candidates.

The Central Bureau of Investigation filed a report against the former deputy director of the West Bengal school education directorate, officials of the School Service Commission and the Board of Secondary Education for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery for the purpose of cheating and using a forged document or electronic record as genuine. They extended undue advantage in appointing undeserving candidates to Group-D staff posts by violating departmental rules and using forged documents.

Since 2019, there has been an increase in the number of searches for domains that participate in “academic fraud. The phrase “do my homework” on Google yields 270 million results. As a growing number of students learn remotely during the pandemic, hundreds of websites offer to do homework or take exams for them. However, these websites do not only provide poor content but also turn the web browsers of anyone else who shares the student’s network, into cryptocurrency miners or literally infecting their computers with malware.

Reports indicate that not only do Chinese students cheat on their college applications, but many continue even after they have arrived in the U.S. An admissions official at the University of Southern California recognized that he earned $40,000 from clients over the years by providing “false college transcripts with inflated grades,” “fraudulent personal statements,” and “phony letters of recommendation” for the applications of his Chinese clients.

According to the Head of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), essay mills have become “public health and safety issue”, affecting all of society. As a result of students cheating in their degrees, there will be people entering into professions who are not qualified to carry out the work that is required. This practice is spreading now to the sixth-formers going to essay mills to get through their coursework at school.
