India’s education sector is at a crossroads, teetering between the lofty promises of private schooling and the harsh realities of growing inequity. Over the past two decades, private schools have proliferated at an astonishing rate, with enrolment surging from 21.4% in 2010 to 46% in 2023 (McCluskey, 2024). This rise reflects the desperation of parents seeking refuge from a crumbling public system. Private schools tantalize, with visions of quality infrastructure and English-medium instruction, yet their expansion comes at a steep cost.
