Education minister Andrew Mulenga has stressed the need for accountability and transparency in the education sector to ensure benefits reach the intended target. The minister said at a joint annual review in Lusaka that there was need for accountability because the government was accountable to the people and education was the cornerstone for development.

The Secondary School Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) has blamed parents for rampant examination malpractices. Parents are actually in the fore-front organising and buying leaked examination papers for their children. According to SESTUZ the government needed to build more schools because the population of Zambia had increased drastically while the number of schools remained static.

Zambia's government has decided to scrap its national bursary scheme and replace it with a transparent student loans scheme, following controversies including allegations of corruption that have dogged the bursary initiative for years.

Teacher unions have expressed concern over fresh reports of examination malpractice in some parts of the country. This follows reports that 30 people, among them 13 teachers and 9 pupils were recently arrested in Kapiri and Mkushi for being in possession of grade nine 2014 examination papers.

Abuja — The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) has targeted Nigerian Universities as part of preventive measures in the long term strategy of the anti-corruption fight. The commission plans to engage management and staff of tertiary institutions to work to imbibe a culture of transparency and accountability in the overall interest of the country.

Thirty nine grade 12 pupils have been arrested in Lusaka over suspected examination malpractices. The 39 were rounded up in Lusaka's Mtendere Compound at a house where they were being guided through a leaked English examination paper.
